Farmers market fever: The city is considering a second market in Mount Pleasant

When McCleary and his wife first came to Mount Pleasant, they visited the farmers market often, but time became a hassle. Because it is held from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m., the start of the market coincides with the dismissal of Moultrie High School and continues until rush hour.

Residents come from near and far to enjoy fresh popcorn, snow cones and produce at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The farmers market is located near Moultrie High School and brings teachers and students together after school. of learning.

“We went at first, but then you find yourself not going as much because where we live it’s 20, 25 minutes away. And I felt kind of bummed that there’s really no push for us north of Mount Pleasant to go to the farmers market,” McCleary said.

There is a growing desire to bring more resources to the northern part of the city, said Councilman Daniel Brownstein.

“I think there’s a perception in some circles that the north side of town is an afterthought and doesn’t get the amount of resources that the south side of town does,” Brownstein said. “We like to say we’re all one Mount Pleasant, one town, and I think adding something like a farmers market in the north area would reinforce that message.”

The idea was cautiously welcomed by the city’s Health, Recreation and Events committee on June 3. Councilwoman Laura Hyatt said she was concerned a second market would “compete” with the well-established market on Coleman Boulevard.

Other concerns about the capacity of farmers to participate in a second farmers market were also raised by the committee.

According to results from a vendor survey conducted by the recreation department, most smaller vendors said they would be interested in participating in a second market, but most farmers who attend the market said they simply don’t have the skills to supported a second meeting.

Mt Pleasant seafood vendors sell fresh local shrimp and fish at the weekly farmers market in Mount Pleasant, Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The weekly event was packed with residents buying fresh produce, allowing vendors to sell most of their goods.

Other vendors, such as Lynda Derano of Tiverton Farms, said she would be interested in participating in a second farmers market, but it depends on the day.

Like many of the other businesses and farmers who sell their wares at the Mount Pleasant Farmers Market, Derano and her family have a schedule of events where they sell and take time to prepare for each market.
